For artists who suspect they need an artist statement,
want deeper connections with their audience,
and quietly doubt that words can help.
You’re an artist because making visual work is how you breathe,

how you process the world, how you make sense of what moves through you.

Your hands know things beyond words. You experience connections in your work that language can’t capture. Your studio practice is an intuitive conversation between your inner world and the materials you love.

And then someone asks you to write about it. Yikes. What?

Suddenly, the creative confidence in your latest piece turns pale.

The clarity you had when working melts into a fog, mixed with confusion and a sprinkle of inadequacy.

Words feel out of place, insufficient, almost insulting to what you make.

Spending your last dollar on art supplies feels like a way better option than trying to translate what anyone can plainly see.

And then your inner critic pipes up, arms crossed, scolding you for even imagining you could capture the spirit of your work in words.

Who are you to say this matters?
Real artists don’t explain their work.
And, really, what if you’ll look like an amateur?

Maybe you’ve tried before.

Maybe you sat down with good intentions, watching the cursor blink
while your inner critic hammered away on everything you tried to say.

Maybe you wrote something that felt flat, generic, like it could describe
anyone’s work, and your critic whispered, See? You can’t even do this
right.

Or maybe you’ve been avoiding it altogether,
hoping no one will notice, hoping your work will speak for itself.

But here’s what you already know, even if you look away:
the whole art world has always run on more than visual aesthetics.

Gallery submissions want statements.

Grant applications require them.

In the art world, 20 different places use statements—
TWENTY!

Collectors need them (more than you realize).

Residencies ask for them.

Your About Page rings hollow without one.

Writing one feeds your creativity (more than you realize).

Gallery submissions want statements.

Grant applications require them.

In the art world, 20 different places use statements—
TWENTY!

Collectors need them (more than you realize).

Residencies ask for them.

Your About Page rings hollow without one.

Writing one feeds your creativity (more than you realize).

And underneath all of that practical pressure lives a deeper truth:

When you can articulate what moves you…
When you can name the invisible forces shaping your work…
Your creative capacity stretches.

Because clarity about what you make:
Deepens the maturity of your work.
Builds confidence in who you are as an artist.
And gives people who love your art
permission to feel even closer to it.

The Real Problem
Isn’t That You Can’t Write

The real problem is that writing about art
requires a different kind of thinking than making art.

Creating visual work engages a complex set of neural pathways.
Writing about it engages different pathways.

You and I are hardwired for complexity. We all have multiple pathways for processing and sharing information: visual, auditory, kinesthetic, linguistic. These are just the beginning.

And professional artists need several strategies
to connect with the people who love their work.

Because you never know which pathway will be the one
that makes someone stop, lean in, and say Yes.

Maybe they fall in love with your work through their eyes.
Maybe through your voice in an artist talk.
Maybe through your words, to understand why your work matters.

The artist statement isn’t about explaining what’s already visible.

It’s about creating one more doorway into your world, one more way for someone to recognize themselves in what you make, one more opportunity for connection.

But writing that statement, finding that language, trusting those words—when your whole creative life has been about what cannot be said… that’s where the struggle lives.

What Writing a Statement
Actually Gives You

Artemisia Gentileschi, Self-Portrait

Here’s what shifts when you finally have
an artist statement that feels true:

When someone asks about your work, you stop second-guessing yourself.

You have language that matches the confidence you feel
in the studio.

Writing about your creative process no longer feels like a betrayal of the mystery.

Gallery submissions feel less intimidating. Grant applications feel more possible. Your website stops feeling incomplete.
Because now you have words that carry the same authority as your work.

And the unexpected transformation? That happens internally.

When you articulate what drives your work,
when you name the invisible currents shaping your artistic choices,
you’re not just writing for others. You’re clarifying your own creative authority.

You begin to trust the relationship between who you are and what you make.

And here’s the surprising part…

Revealing what, how, and why you do your art
does not dismantle the beauty or mystery of it. Quite the opposite.
Your words invite others into the mystery and allow them to share the beauty.

Introducing your . . .

Writing the Artist Statement

INTENSIVE

WRITE WITH THE SAME AUTHORITY YOU MAKE YOUR ART

This is a guided, time-bound system designed to help you…

write an artist statement that feels true, alive, and usable in 7 weeks.

This is not a course about marketing tactics or SEO optimization.

This Artist Statement Intensive gives you just the right guidance
without insulting your intelligence.
And the best part?
You don’t even have to like writing.

The Intensive is designed for steady, uncomplicated completion:
short exercises, no filler, no fluff.
A 20 year, time-tested, step-by-step process
that guides you through:

  • what
  • why
  • how
  • where
  • and when you need an artist statement
that’s as fundamental as your art supplies.

After two decades of working with artists, I’ve learned that
insight alone isn’t enough.

You need structure. You need accountability. You need someone checking
in to make sure your inner critic doesn’t shame you out of finishing.

That’s why I’m teaching my time-honored Writing The Artist Statement
process inside a 7-week Intensive:
a contained, supported experience built
around weekly, hands-on Workbooks and structured reading-and-writing
guidance delivered twice a week.

My HIGHTEST Intentions For You

When you complete this Intensive, you will:

  • Have a professional process in place for any kind of artist statement, from general to artwork-specific,
a series-based or installation-focused, so your words can evolve alongside your work for years to come.
  • Discover your natural language, the words you have been using all along as you think, wonder, and live with your artwork.
  • Transform your inner critic into a practical editor, one that guides refinement instead of shutting you down.
  • Experience a new, grounded confidence when you speak or write about your work, because now your language
matches the authority you already feel inside your studio.
  • See your creative process more clearly as you articulate what happens before, during, and after you work, expanding how you understand your own artistic practice.
  • Invite your audience into your imaginative world with engagement and resonance, without sacrificing the mystery
    or integrity of your work.
  • Feel the deep satisfaction of a completed, true-to-you artist statement, ready for submissions, websites, galleries, presentations, and the many other professional places that ask for language as compelling as your art.

This 7-week
Writing the Artist Statement Intensive

is FOR YOU when you …

Want the writing process to deepen your artistic practice, not pull you away from it

Are open to classical creativity exercises that may feel unfamiliar at first, because you trust depth over quick fixes

Want Stay-on-Track Workbooks that turn each week’s
ideas into your own writing

Want your statement to expand what viewers see, feel, and remember in your work

Want to stand apart from the thousands of bland,
badly written statements crowding the field

Want the thoughtful structure of a 7-week Intensive, paced to fit a working artist’s life

This Intensive Won’t Work

IF YOU …

Are convinced your visual work does all the heavy lifting,
so words aren’t necessary

Are focused exclusively on the marketing aspect of your statement

Are averse to honest self-reflection about why you make
what you make

Prefer your material cut and dry, instead of creative exploration

Have trouble trusting an exercise when the result isn’t immediately obvious

Expect every page to be packed with information (sometimes your eyes need breathing room so the brain can think)

Why This Artist Statement Intensive Works

This Intensive works
very well

because it integrates your internal landscape
with what’s happening outwardly.

Most artist-statement courses treat the work like a branding exercise, leaning on tired marketing language, subtle manipulation. But art doesn’t move people that way. It moves them through human connection, when a viewer’s heart beats a little faster, the room seems to expand, and their nervous system whispers, I want more.
You learn to articulate what is true and alive in your creative process. When your language embodies your lived experience as an artist, your statement becomes that signal of human-to-human connection.
This Intensive guides you to recover the language of your organic self-talk, the private voice you already use when you are alone in the studio, mixing paint, arranging materials, or stepping back to see what you have made. Your unedited stream of thoughts are not background chatter. It is the raw material we work with.
You are already talking about your work inside your own mind. My approach helps you bring that language forward before the inner critic swoops in to censor you. Together, we turn that inner critic into an internal editor who helps you refine what you are saying instead of shutting you down.
The writing methods in this Intensive work even if you do not think of yourself as a writer. These are short, focused, and feel more like small experiments than academic exercises.
Each step builds on the last, so by the end you have a finished artist statement ready for your portfolio.
And it includes the new 3rd edition of the only book exclusively on WRITING THE ARTIST STATEMENT: REVEALING THE TRUE SPIRIT OF YOUR WORK.

From beginning to end, your book was easy to follow and understand.

~ Bruce Fowler, sculptor

This book was good for me to read, encouraging, and fun to do. It never occurred to me that my statement would change over time as my work evolved. Thank you.

Who is Ariane?

I’m Ariane Goodwin, Ed.D., and I’ve spent over 24 years helping artists and creators own the room when they write and speak about their work.

I wrote the first and only book dedicated entirely to the artist statement because I got tired of watching smart, talented artists stumble over this essential piece of their professional life.

I’ve worked with painters, sculptors, fiber artists, ceramicists, photographers, and mixed-media artists at every stage of their careers. From those just stepping into the art world to established artists with years of exhibitions behind them.

What I’ve learned is this: the struggle with writing an artist statement is never about your intelligence or your worthiness.

It’s about accessing a different part of your creative brain and trusting that your words will hold the same power as your visual language.

I help artists trust their path and own their value,
from the inside out.

PART 1: The Intensive Support System

You’ll receive two private guidance emails each week for seven weeks, designed to lead you through the Intensive on a rhythm that fits your life and artistic practice.

Recaps the previous week, introduces the current focus, and lays out your reading and writing prompts
  • Artist Statement Intensive Email #2
Guides you through the second half of the week with
additional prompts to keep you moving forward.

By Week 5, you’ll have a complete first draft of your artist statement.

PART 2: The Taking-Action Workbooks

Once a week for six weeks, you’ll receive a companion Workbook in your inbox: Week One/Two/Three/Four/Five/ & Seven. Week Six has no workbook.

    YOUR COMMITMENT TO YOURSELF

This process works when you show up for it.

You do not need to be a great writer. You do not need all the answers before you begin.
You do not even need to feel confident.

What you need is a simple, steady willingness to engage.

    • To do the exercises even when they feel unfamiliar.
    • To write badly at first, trusting that roughness is part of how clarity emerges.
    • To trust that you can guide your inner critic toward useful editing instead of toxic criticism.
    • To trust that your organic language about your work already exists and is waiting for you to access it.

The Intensive Workbooks provide the structure.
    The ebook provides the map.
The twice-weekly emails guide the whole system so you stay on track.

But it is your commitment to return,
week after week, to read, write, and reflect
that allows this work to take root.

When you complete this Intensive, you will not only have an artist statement. You will have a professional process
for updating it as your work evolves. You will have a deeper relationship to your own creative authority. And you will have language that strengthens both your bond to your work and your connection to the people who see it.

I have to tell you that your book has been an invaluable tool for me. I used it years ago to write my first authentic artist statement. Now years later, I use it when my work evolves and changes because I need to not only to write about these changes, but to understand them. I continue to use the book when a new series emerges. Writing a statement for a series helps me to see where the work is going and how it is all connected.
