For committed visual artists,

who want to keep trusting their own eye,

when doubt, confusion, or creative uncertainty drop in.

You work alone a lot.

Your art comes from a pull deep within you to express, and share, what
moves you. You do this work because it’s what makes you feel most
alive.

And yet, some ghosts can still haunt you. Working in isolation
makes it easy for doubts to creep in, despite evidence of your skill.

— Sometimes you find it hard to believe your work
has enough value, so pricing gets sticky.

— Other times, outside demands steal time and space
away from your art, which makes you worry about
your priorities.

— And when artistic uncertainty or doubt cast a shadow?
They undermine a deeper truth you know in your bones:
My work has more to say… I have more to say.

You just can’t always see how to work with the tension
between the artwork you’re making, and the even deeper art
you know is possible.

I’m Ariane Goodwin.

I hold a doctorate in Creative
Behavior and Human Development,
which underpins most of my work.

In 2002, I published Writing the Artist
Statement: Revealing the True Spirit of
Your Work,
a book that gives the people
drawn to your art a distinctively human
way to bond with you and the work
you make.

I launched the first (online or off) professional
development conference for visual artists that
ran for six years—the smARTist Telesummit—
because I was astonished, and just a bit
furious, when I discovered how artists at
that time didn’t have access to the same
support systems as other professionals.

Over these last 24 years, my work has accompanied more than
3,000 artists on their art-career journey, and my one-to-one
conversations consistently land on where artists see themselves
going, and what’s getting in their way.

You work alone a lot, but that doesn’t mean you have to carry
your art career alone.

Come into the conversation and let me accompany you
between work sessions, with letters in your inbox every other week
about the inner realities and outer work of making art in the
ArtLife you are building.

And whenever you’re moved to write back,
it’ll be my delight to respond.
